Problem with IPD overload springs? 200

I installed the IPD overload springs last week on the 86 240, and they just don't look quite right to me. When the car is unloaded, just sitting in the garage, the top 3-4 coils are compressed and touching. I have never seen any set of coil springs ,that were in good shape, that had coils that touch. I always thought that was a bad thing. They are supposed to be variable rate, but by mashing the top coils together? The customer service person at IPD stated that this was 'normal'. Anybody else install these recently ( or older)? What do they look like, and is this normal? Thanks in advance.
