Coolant sensor 900

The low coolant warning light came on in my '94 960. There is plenty of coolant in the overflow tank. How should I go about troubleshooting the problem? Could it be something as simple as cleaning the sensor electrical connection, or could the sensor possibly be failing?

All thoughts and advice appreciated.
