Recently spotted a 87 740GLE Turbo Wagon in a wrecker yard and inquired about it as a possible vehicle for my 16 year old. The wrecker guy offers to sell me the vehicle for $150 and tells me he has the title that the owner gave him as payment for the tow. When the car stared and ran, I figured what the hell, buy it. It had been sitting for almost two years and it needed some work. Most evident was the back wheel being pushed up into the fender well. I replace the panhard rod and got the rear end lined up. Replaced all the fluids including the rear end gear lube. Replaced one of the front tie rods. Replaced the rear shocks (cheap Monroe's). The turbo was not working but the car ran w/out it fine. I found a small rod or something loose on the underside of the turbo (volvo turbo, not a gates) and got it reattached and the turbo started working again. My total cost on this auto is about $650 and my son has been driving it for three months. These cars are really pretty amazing and tough. 175K miles
I would like some advice on replacing the front suspension. The right front shock/strut is not working. It is very stiff and rigid except when really on a rough road. I have read the FAQ's stuff on the front suspension and don't feel mechanically gifted enough to do it myself. Who should I have do the work and what should I replace? I am cheap and want a fairly cheap fix if it exists. I can get ball joints and the necessary suspension parts but what are they? thanks
