87 740 Turbo- well, I've narrowed my trouble to the entire fuel / exhaust system 700

I haven't figured out how to get /use error codes yet, POsted previously, But i thought in the meantime, I could run a few symptoms by the all-knowing forum here. I have spent hours pouring through previous threads, and have come up with a few ideas, But maybe some guidance will thin out my "to-do" list.

SYmptoms: Car is in "limp home" mode, as I've heard it called. Minimal power, sounds rough, i can smell gas, as in it's running rich.

When this first started I felt a loss of power when utilizing the "turbo". I'd cruise smoothly to the stoplight, but as soon as i tried to enter on the highway, It intermittantly lost power, like a surge, ony the opposite.

Over a period of a week, it just started running like that all of the time.

I had previously ( about a year ago) replaced the hose leading out of the airbox, and the airbox thermostat.

I'm hoping its not the AMM (MAF), Visually it looks okay, but what does that mean?

Through research, i've decided that the better candidates for the problem are the AMM (MAF), O2 sensor, Fuel Pressure regulator, another vaccuum leak, or fuel pump relay (although this is last on my list)

Now, i probably don't have the proper tools to test w/o replacing, although i do have a neightbor parting out his car of same year. Is it practical to think that i can just swap out those parts and try to narrow it down that way? is a used o2 sensor just a bad idea?

If i try to troubleshoot the amm by removing it to check idle, does that mean just unplugging it, or do i have to remove it altogether and get a piece of hose to bridge the gap.

Well I appreciate all of your help and this forum is the best!!
