1984 volvo won't start. has spark. 200

My '84 242 died one day while i was driving it ane i havent been able to start it since, except for one time when i ahd copious amounts of starter fluid in there (have since not been able to replicate this incidence...will fire and then die about 1 second later). Anyhow, it has spark from the coil, and to plug. The fuses are fine. Is the fuel pump in the tank or is it external? And what's involved in replacing i? Also, i've read that it could be the fuel pump relay...where is this relay located?.

Thanks for your help as always.

There should be a spade fuse for the fuel pump near the coil. This may need to be replaced or cleaned. Also the contacts for this fuse often need a shot of contact cleaner. It is an exposed area. Come to think of it, so are the coil contacts so spray them, too

I had starting problems and this simple maintenance solved the problem. Good luck

Assuming this '84 is not a turbo, Fuse 13 is worth a real close look. It may appear "fine" (ie not blown), but corrosion and weak contact tension will prevent the fuel relay from picking.

Jalopy's tips are good if it's a turbo (K-jet), but my guess is that this is an LH 2.0 car. That means checking the 25 amp fuse wiring near the coil, expecially at the Battery end.

It could be the fuses for the in tank and/or the main fuel pump - they should be fuses #5 and #7 - corrosion is ALWAYS a problem with the older style fuses on the 240s. Try turning them at the very least or better yet carefully clean the contact points with a brass wire brush. The fuel pump relay is tucked up underneath the dash by the left kick panel up past the fuse box - near the hood release. It should be green in color. They do fail of course - alot of the time they get a cold solder break on the board that usual goes when they heat up from use. You can bypass it using a wire with male connectors at each end. Simply disconnect the plugin connector at the relay and bridge it between the red (power)and yellow/red (goes to pumps) wires in the connector - that will run the pumps without using your ignition key or starting the car - much easier to hear them running - if they are. Just remove the gas cap and you should hear the intank pump as well.

As suggested you can check your fuses. The relay on the B23F (if this is what you have) are usually not a problem. My '84 fuel pump relay and system relay are the small silver ones at the passenger back footwell. You should check to see if your fuel pumps are running. There is the main one under the car in a tray on the drivers side under the rear seat. This is the most important one. The other is in the fuel tank. Since you have spark the pumps should run. Also is your car well tuned? The spark you see may not be sufficient to start.

Good Luck
