The three most commonly fixed items for failure to restart after shutting down (the filling station or convenience store stop) are (1) the fuel pump relay, (2) the CPS, and (3) the fuel pump check valve.
The fuel pump relay, not the pump itself should be clobbered. Well, give it a sharp rap -- it is usually a failed solder joint on the relay supplying current to the pump.
But, if you hear the pump running, it could be the Crank Position Sensor reacting to the heat arising after shutdown. Check for a yellow band on the sensor's wire indicating it is the old, failure prone style. Should be replaced with a white band by now.
Failing that, it is likely to be the check valve, that is a separate part screwed into the outlet of the fuel pump. When it fails, the fuel pressure is not maintained and with lowered pressure, the fuel boils in the rail, sometimes forcing liquid back through the fuel pump so it has nothing but vapor to try to move. The part is Bosch, cheap and separately replaceable. A fuel pressure test will confirm.
