Cold Start Problem 700 1991

I just purchased a 740 as a project car. Amongst several problems it has, one ventures the farthest from my experience. That is, cold start issues. The man I bought the car from did an engine swap and since then it has had problems starting when cold. A service engine light is on, but I have not pulled the code yet. None the less, when the engine is cold, it acts as if I can not give it enough fuel. When it does finally start, it will not idle without excesive accelleration for a few minutes. Does anyone have expereince with this? Thanks in advance.

Cold Start Problem 700 1991

Not clear. It idles excessively or does not idles well. If it will not run properly for a few minutes and then smooths out, could be your temperature sensor in the block (under intake manifold). If so, you are actually running too rich until the temperature changes the resistance of the sensor to the computer.

If you start the engine, run it for a few seconds, stop it and then pull a spark plug and see it is wet, then the temp sensor could be your problem. ($35.00)
