I had my 1990 740 GLE into a small Volvo shop for repairs - I had changed the air filter, they put ina new distributor cap, wires, air mass meter. Got it back and it runs very rough, wants to idle down around 600 and stall, and gets really bad fuel mileage. Shifts late and a little hard, too. Runs fine on highway, but still with bad gas mileage.

I am short of cash for a month, after this last trip tothe mechanics ($700 - needed some other non-engine work as well)so I am looking for things I can check or change, or some idea of what this might be.

Double check your mechanics work. Is it possible a couple of wires have been crossed? Another item to check is if any of the wires are shorting out on the frame. I know the wire from the coil to distributor can short out on the fender well. I found that one out in the dark while getting a jump start.

Where there any problems before you took it in? You didn't mention any plug replacement but it seems like you shouldn't expect the car to run like this after a $700 "repair" bill. Could be a simple loose intake connection or poor timing setting but you should take it back.

Make sure that you do not have a vacuum hose disconnected.
Why did you have the AMM replaced?

I will chekc the hoses, and contact the mechanic who did the work.

The mass air flow device was diagnosed as bad by my gneral mechanic, and we were referred to a volvo specialist who rpelaced it, the wires, and the distributor cap.

We had it towed into my usual shop. The car was running very rough, then idled low, then wouldn't start reliably, then wouldn't started. I had changed the plugs and the air filter. The plugs were foulked and also changed.

It now idles very low stall at low speed, and tries to stall right away after starting.
