'94 960 suddenly stalls or goes into limp mode 900 1994

Hi,
I own a 94 960 that has been givin me a lot of problems. About a month ago my car started stalling suddenly and the check engine light would come up. I get codes 1-1-5 and 1-1-3 repeatedly. The car will suddenly stalls at anytime, but it usually rides good first thing in the morning for a few minutes. When the car is going at high speeds I can just turn the ignition back then forward and it drives fine for a while. When the car is going slow or I'm at a stop sign all the lights on the dash light up and I have to pop it in Neutral and start it up.

Any thoughts.
For a 94 960 where is the:
Ignition relay
Fuel relay
any other relay I should check.

I hope y'all can help me out.
Thanks in advance.
JR

'94 960 suddenly stalls or goes into limp mode 900 1994

Hello,
Thanks for all the advise, I really appreciate it. Yesterday I looked for the relays that Spook recommended looking at. For the last couple of weeks I was trying to find these relays on my own but i could not find them. I bought the Chiltons manual, but it is confusing since it is not specific to any Volvo model and they try to cover too much at one time. Anyway I checked the relays and immediately I noticed that the fuel pump relay (under the radio) was really loose and not making good contact. I was so excited I took it out for a drive without clearing the codes. I drove it for about 15 minutes with no problems. Usually the car would have stopped atleast 5 times in the conditions that I test drove it (stops, traffic, engine warm, etc..). When I pulled into the garage, just before I turned it off it went into Limp node.

I cleared the codes this morning and drove it to work (about 25 min) with not problems. The car feels good. I placed my hand on the relay after I turned it off and it was warm to the touch but not hot.

Did my car go into Limp mode because I failed to clear the codes prior the test drive or do you think there may be multiple problems?

Anyway I am very happy with the improvement and hopefully I can figure this out 'cause I love the car.

Thanks again for taking the time to read my problem.
JR

Dear jrangel,

Good p.m. and may this find you well. If re-seating the fuel system relay caused an improvement, we may conclude its being loose was part of the problem.

Since the car reverted to limp-home mode, you should replace the fuel system relay. These relays are supposed to seat firmly, such that a little muscle is needed to remove them.

You may be able to get a spare at a salvage yard. If not, go to www.fcpgroton.com

Nick Bauer is fcp's Volvo expert. Let him know your needs, and he'll get the right part, the first time.

Hope this helps.

Yours faithfully,

spook

Dear jrangel,

Good p.m. and may this find you well. Yes. This is a fuel injection problem.
Here are some possibilities, which may not necessarily apply to the 960 (I operate 940s):
- radio interference suppression relay - actually the fuel injection relay - likely is failing / has failed, cutting the power supply to the fuel injectors
- the fuel system relay is failing / has failed, cutting the supply of fuel, to the engine.

The fuel injection relay is in the engine bay, driver's side (USA/Canada models) either against the inner fender wall, or on/near the strut tower (according to Volvo TP 3502201, Lighting, Instrumentation, and other Electrical Equipment,
p. 103).

The fuel system relay is behind the kick panel, in the passenger side footwell, on the side closest to the front center console. This relay is in the top row, center.

You may be able to get used relays at a salvage yard. If they restore proper operation, you've found the fault, and then can get a brand new replacement.

Hope this helps.

Yours faithfully,

spook

Codes 113/115 are for the notorious fuel injector wiring intermittent failure under the intake manifold. Many folks here have tried different things, occasionally something works. But the only known cure is to replace the wires/to from the fuel injectors to the relay box on the driver's side strut tower. You can make jumpers and cut the old wires out.

Could it be he also has a bad ignition switch? Had one on mine that acted up like this, then again mine didn't set any codes off.

When the ignition switch on our 98 went bad it didn't set off any codes either.
