Stalling 240 wagon

Hello,

I have been battling a stalling problem in my 1987 240 wagon with Automatic Transmission for the last 2 weeks. It starts fine and runs OK at highway speeds. It stalls during stop and go traffic, especially on hills. It will normally restart right away. So far I have replaced the fuel filter, fuel pump relay, main fuel pump, and tank fuel fuel pump - and it is still stalling.

The main pump has been making a surging noise (old and new one) which led me to the replace the items I listed. I am now wondering if it could be an electrical problem, or possibly the fuel pressure regulator. I checked voltage at the tank pump and I only had 9 volts. Could problems with the 25 amp fuse under the hood cause the main pump to make noise and stall the car? If so can the fuse be repaired or is it best to replace?

What about the FPR? How can I test it to see if it is functioning?

Any help is appreaciated. I am getting real tired of laying under the car every night trying to figure this out.

    Seems like your IAC(intake air control) valve needs to be cleaned. It is located under the intake manifold. Just disconnect the three hoses and an electrical connector. Use carb cleaner to clean it. This should do the job.

    Follow hillbilly's advice. You may wish to replace the 25 amp fuse and its holder with a new fuse and a waterproof holder. These can be bought at most auto parts stores.

    Just a thought, but have you cleaned the throttle body? Also clean the Idle Control Valve.

    Yes, that 25A fuse or the other fuel pump fuses can cause the problems that you are experiencing. The fact that you only have 9 Volts to the pump is a good indicator. You also need to check the ground connections. Try cleaning the fuse terminals and post back.

      Thanks for all the advice. Last night I discovered that the replacement tank pump was also bad, and replaced it again. After doing this the car runs much better, but I still am getting noticeable pump noise from the main pump and the tank pump. The car still occasionally stalls at idle, but it is much better than it was. I don’t remember hearing any pump noise before I starting having these problems, so I am concerned that the root cause of the problem has not been corrected and my new pumps will fail soon. One strange thing is I get 0 volts at both pumps when the key is in the “on” position but the manual says I should see 12 volts. I do see 12 volts at the pumps when the car is actually running.

      Some have suggested I clean the IAC and throttle body I am planning on doing this tonight, but I would like to understand how this could lead to noisy fuel pumps. The stalling doesn't seem to be low idle type stall - it is acting like fuel starvation.

      Could the fuel pressure regulator cause these type of problems?

      The pumps I installed are from Advance Auto and the main pump looks different from the original. Could these pumps just be noisier than the original ones?
