In an earlier post, I described my intention to clean the accumulated fuel deposits from the intake valve stems [in my '82 245 CI (K-jet) car], as visible through the intake ports once the intake manifold is removed.

I had noticed quite an accumulation of junk on the shafts of the valves and thought I might try removing the deposits manually the next time I had the intake manifold off. I thought at the time that there was so much material there that "detergent" fuel additives would be a long time in removing it.

Well, between then and now I've run about three tanks of good gas through the system with the addition to each tank of the recommended amount of generic fuel system cleaner. I had the intake manifold off this weekend and I was surprised to see that the deposits have been completely removed. Clean as could be in there. Even the generic fuel system cleaner did the job.

I was relieved that some rig-job, mechanical cleaning would not be necessary--as I was a little concerned about messing with the valves and maybe getting some tough gunk stuck between the valve and valve seat--and I was surprised that the fuel cleaner worked so quickly.

It would be great to know which brand of gas contains the sufficient amount of "detergent" to keep the system clean.

Anyway, I thought some of yous guys might like to know how this little situation worked out, as I had sought the advice of the board about how to proceed. Conclusion: No drastic measures necessary--despite the fun I have in cooking them up--just read the label on the bottle!
