Still going.... what a great car! 700 1987

I am the owner of a beautiful 1987 original paint without rust!! Volvo 760 GLE with a B280F. The engine has NEVER had the valves adjusted, and they are super super quiet (we've owned this car since new, it was probably adjusted once while still under warranty).

It's at 277K kms right now, engine does not use oil (leaks it a bit), the AW tranny still shifts nicely, and this car is actually getting better than expected fuel economy (uses 10.5L/100km highway, 12.5L/100km average combined). That isn't too bad, all things considered.

If it wasn't for the interior which is cracking and peeling everywhere, you'd think this car was "mint".

The ride is still excellent (over the years, the car has been maintained, but has required VERY little maintenance... incredible indeed).

I've also been using VLVworld as a parts source and have been pretty happy so far. I bought some parts at my local NAPA that ended up being QUITE a bit more expensive.

When this baby dies, I plan on getting a late 960 or S90.. yes, I would like a car that sips fuel, but the ride, the comfortable seats, (ok, air would be nice, mine stopped working yearrrrrrrrrrrrs ago), RWD... I love it!!!

I just love my 760 and wanted to express how happy I am with it.

Good stuff. I owned an '88 760gle about 5yrs ago. Great car! Had 205k kms when i got it, sold it a year later to a buddy of mine who drove it to 325k kms. Now he has recently sold it to another mutual friend of ours where it's parked waiting for brakes, headlight lenses, struts , etc.... ! Needless to say, this thing still runs great. I'm glad it's still in the "family" , so to speak.
Now i own a '90 740ti, which i'm not having great luck with. It's been a constant battle getting this thing to run properly! I'll get it eventually, but it's no B280F. Cheers.

By the way, your user name tells me you're in the Toronto area. Know of any good shops/ parts suppliers. My 740 is in need of a turbo.

Glad to hear that I am not the only content 760 owner. Ours is an 89 with 260,000km on it. I have adjusted the valves a couple of times over the years, and just replaced the Nivomats in the rear, but the car is great to own and drive. Lots of power, and as you say it rides great. This car does not burn any oil, and leaks the same amount. My daughter and I maintain it religiously (it is her first car). Black on black, no rust, no cracks in dash, so-so leather, A/C updated last summer for $250Cdn. I have never got pats from VLVWorld, but I buy used and new bits for all my cars from Ed Schram in Vancouver/Surry, and have found them to be excellant. The 760 shares a stable with a few other oldies.

Was that 92 960 GLE a 16v (I guess that's a B234F engine, right)? I know some 960s got a 16v engine as well as the 740s, or so I have heard. If that be the case, how much damage was done when the timing belt broke?

Nope, sorry to say it is a B6304F engine, 24 valve, and ALL 24 valves are toast. Big divots in the pistons too, but the important damage is to the head. Full replacement required. The belt had only 32000Km on it when it went.
