Help. How to tell if auto trans needs a locking torque converter or not

I have a trans that I pulled out of the junkyard; the torque converter was already pulled. I have a bad trans in my car, and I want to use my torque converter; I have been warned that I need to make sure both transmissions take the same type of torque converter, but I can't find any obvious markings on them that designate this. My car is an '89 244 and I got the trans out of an '88 745.
Thank you in advance.

Help. How to tell if auto trans needs a locking torque converter or not

I do not know this for a fact but I was always under the impression that the "L" designation meant it was a locker. As in AW70 vs. AW70L. I can tell you one thing though, the larger converter that you see in an AW70L will not fit in the early housings, it's too big by the smallest amount. I found this out the hard way last week.

Help. How to tell if auto trans needs a locking torque converter or not

Okay, I finally found the tag on the tranny. I had sprayed it with brake cleaner and wiped it once but it was still just black so I didn't realize that is what it was. So now I have to look at the one on my car to see if it is locking as well.
I am sorry that the one you had wasn't the right one. That must have really sucked. I was told in an other post that they were not interchangable. I didn't know which was the earlier style. I also didn't know that my trans was made in Japan.
      Thanks
