1992 240 - Won't start again after engine is shut off for a short period 200 1992

I have had this problem several times in the past year, wondering what to do when it happens....

If I stop the car and cut the engine for a very short period, after the car has been driven for 10 minutes to 30 minutes, the car does not want to turn over again. For instance, if I stop in front of my husband's office building downtown to pick him up and he takes longer than expected, I shut off the car and wait, then it won't start up again. Usually happens when I have ice cream in the car on a hot day as well.

When I do try to start the car up again, the starter engages ,the engine starts to rumble to life, but will often die again before fully kicking in. Usually I have to try 3 or 4 times, then finally, make sure no one is coming down the street, give it a lot of gas right after it turns over and then take off as fast as I can.

What should I be checking?

Thanks!

There is an entire section of the 700/900 FAQ that addresses hot-start problems (the advice there applies to your car as well):
