1989 m47 transmission buzz like operation game 200

When I shift into or from fourth gear it will buzz like the operation game. It will still go into gear and it does not do it every time. I have changed the fluid and have had the clucth adjusted. Any ideas? Thanks

As strange as it sounds, make certain your buzz is from the gearbox, and not something unrelated. Most "buzzing" noises are related (in my experience) to the bellhousing bracket for the headpipe or the heatshields (if your car still has them). The buzz only occurs at a specific rev range---very harmonic thing the buzz. The fault with the bracket is difficult to diagnose. The breaks are difficult to view from above and often not visible from below. The trick is to either pry on the bracket/pipe until you find something or remove the bracket completely. I usually find that removing the bolt on the headpipe will result in pieces falling off---on my head if I'm not careful. Also check heatshields around the exhaust manifold, though this is much less common. It's amazing how this hardware can sometimes manifest itself as a transmission problem, vibrating right through the shifter. You might also check the center suipport bearing. This usually causes a whistle, hum or hiss rather than "the buzz" though.

But wait, there's more (no Ginsu knives though). The buzz can also be a collapsed core in your catalytic converter. But wait, there's more! Check the heat shield over the converter too, if the car has one, and it should. And one more very unusual one, check for one or more bolts in the transmission crossmember that may be loose...enough to rattle.

Cheers,

DS
