Hood won't open 900

Hi All,

After replacing my radiator and AC condenser on my 1997 960 wagon and taking the car out for a test drive I went to open the hood and recheck everything and found the hood would not open. The hood release from inside the car feels stuck and with force it does pull but it feels like something is stuck and the cable is just stretching and I am worried it may break if I pull to hard.

At the hood I can lift the passenger side of the hood up and get access to the center lever. It is the drivers side that seems to be stuck. I have had a helper sit on the hood or try to move it but it won't budge.

Before I really break something I was hoping someone had specific advice as to how I can access the latch from underneath the car (not the center latch which I can access but does nothing when I move it) specifically the drivers’ side post which is the post with the spring on it or something else that may be the culprit on the right drivers side.

I have looked through the 700/900 FAQ and searched the site but have found little in terms of what to remove from underneath the car to gain access. I was thinking the headlamp but not sure. Any suggestions would be great.

Thanks,

Angus

    Hood opened!!! 900 1997

Got the hood opened in five minutes and it was indeed a pinched cable. When I installed the radiator and AC condenser the cable ended up in front of the condenser instead of inbetween the condenser and radiator where it belongs. Thanks to Marks advice I was able to pop the hood and then put the cable back in its proper position-hood release works like a charm. I can't thank Mark enough for bailing me out on this one.

Angus, you can access it from outside with a flashlight and a long screwdriver but I think you are going to find yourproblem is bigger than that. You said that you replaced the radiator and a/c condenser, what do you think the chances are that you have pinched the release cable when you removed the upper core support to get into the condenser? If it is pinched like I think it is no amount of pulling on it is going to release it. Truthfully I don't know what you could do with that one. If you pull too hard on the release handle though you will break that and then you'll have two problems. I will take a look at one of the 700's I have out in the shop this morning and see if I can't figure something out that might help.

      Mark,

You bring up a good point (gulp). I am not quite sure if I did pinch the cable but as I recall it appeared to be was back in place I reinstalled the condenser. The cable runs between the condenser and the radiator. Even so, I fear that is most likely the culprit.

If the cable turns out to be the issue…Any alternative ways to pop the latch? Such as going in from below?

      Best,

      Angus

Angus, well you can try going in from below but the unfortunate truth of the situation is that you as good of a purchase as you can get on that cable with the hood release cable and that where it is pinched is probably not that accesible. The other fact is that you really don't know until you get your butt under there with a flashlight and a long screwdriver and have a look around. I get to looking at that cable on another 700 after lunch today, been real busy.

        Mark
