All set to upgrade A/C system from R12, then wouldn't you know it, I read about an R12 sub called Freeze 12. Supposedly this will work in place of r12, with no system upgrade sneeded- same lubricant, dryer, etc. From what I gather, it's a matter of evacuate and refill. Anyone have any experience with this?
thanks

In a post on the 240 board a year or so ago, an experienced Volvo tech (Chris Herbst) advised against Freeze-12, since the component that carries the compressor oil leaks easiest. I had it installed at a trusted shop that said my system was leak-free, but within a year the compressor failed. Coincidence? - maybe, but my next attempt to fix the A/C on this car will use the gen. Volvo 134a conversion kit.

I found this site:
http://www.sherco-auto.com/fr4012.htm
and noted they sell a Freeze 12 leak sealer / detector.. Did you try this?

The A/C in my 740t didn't work when I bought the car, 3 years ago. My mechanic suggested Freeze 12 along with a dye which would show any leaks. It cooled ok, but not as well as my 242t with R-12. The 740 never showed any leaks so, last month, I had the 740 converted to R-12 as part of my pre-summer service. It's cold enough now to freeze a chicken...

I talked to a shop today who will do my 740 turbo. He said its completely compatable and great for volvos and cools better than 134.
Cost is estimated to be 100 bucks for labor and two pounds of it. No modifications to the car are necessary at all.
For comparison, I talked to another shop who said it will be 350 bucks to use r-12

Yes, using it about 3 years. The '83 and '85 24xTi's are real chilly with it. I think it is composed of R134a and another gas. Something like that.

Two sites:
Freeze12.com and Freeze-12.com separate outfits as far as I could tell.

WOW! Can you use the same manifold gauge set as with r-12? Did you change any components at all? O-rings?

Well, all the cars, '83 242Ti, '85 244Ti and '79 242GT were conversions from old York systems. I put in used rotary compressors, new low side lines, driers and expansion valves and new O-rings went with that. I did change the oil to the mix of R-12 oil and ester that Freeze 12 recommends. Overall, I am very happy with it all.

thanks for your experience. is it necessary to change the dyer, Orings, etc, like in a regular change over kit- ala Groton? Also, is it necessary to drain the lube and add all new lube? My compressor was changed to rotary a while back, so at least I am part way there..

I considered that option a few years back. I decided against it because of talk of the two elements that make up freeze 12. It was said that if you dont have a leak free system, one of the elements will leak off, leaving the other. I forget how it goes exactly, and what the final outcome of that situation would be. I decided, based on what I read, that if you're going to use "freeze" then you need to make sure that your system is leak free.
I converted my r12 system to r134. It cost me about 132.00. It aint the best system once it gets really, really hot, but it keeps me from becoming a crispy critter. Ive also heard of folks getting pretty good results with 134 when done right.
Its been a couple of years since Ive dealt with this subject, so I dont remember the particulars. Im sure if you do a search on the subject you will come up with more info.
I hate to rain on your parade. you could possible use the stuff, with no problem.
But I think its best to know exactly what you're getting into. No since in throwing good money after bad money. You know? Good luck.
This is just my 2 cent worth.
