164E fuel cutting out 140-160

I have a 1974 164E and it all started when my car got too low on gas and almost died. Since then when it got to a quarter tank it would start cutting out, then it did it at a half and now it does it at three quarters. It does it at all speeds but only after I've been driving it for about ten minutes or so. I've already changed the fuel filter and the fuel pump seems to be working fine. I also bought a brand new distributor rotor and spark plug wires. My father says it may be the the distributor contact points. I figured the fuel pump may be losing power every so often but I'm not so good with the fuel system. Anyone have any ideas or a list of things I may be able to work through? Also when it reaches about 2,500RPM(I have no spedo) my car starts rumbling and shaking really bad but it eventually fades around 3,500RPM. Any ideas on that one?
Thanks

Other than the strainer it may be a bit of crud in the tank covering the inlet. Dumping a little fuel may flush out your trouble (wear gloves and eye protection).
There is a possibility that the small section of fuel hose between the hard line attached to the chassis and the pump is rotten and swollen nearly shut.

Well I found out what was causing me alot of issues with my vehicle. A broken motor mount. I never thought to look at it. Just so you all know, I'm not a complete idiot. I'm just a 21 year old girl that is still learning. Even I should have thought of that though. We will see if that fixes anything when I can afford to buy one and install in next Saturday. Can anyone tell me if it is particularly difficult to replace the motor mount on a 164?

If you decide to hook up a fuel pressure gauge permanenetly, use only one with an electric sender so there is NO gas flowing into the car from the fuel line to the gauge on the dash. Auto Meter makes a nice one. Try E Gauges.com....good prices wide variety. If I remember right, their web site has a caution on this.

    Tank Strainer collapsing? 140-160

I once had a '73 164 (bought brand new, many years ago) that once developed a habit of fuel starvation and stalling -- it would restart promptly, though.

It turned out to be it's fuel strainer -- a small cylindrical "filter", inside the tank and accessed by removing a ~.5" square drive "bolt" on the bottom of the tank. It fits over the end of the fuel pickup line.

The problem was that it was defective -- to weak -- and was collapsing when fuel was being drawn too rapidly -- after the engine stopped, it expanded back to normal. Changing the filter fixed this.

    I believe that p/n is 688593.

I considered that as well but I haven't checked it. I actually called a mechanic and asked him if that could be the problem but he said most likely not. I asked him if I was to unscrew that piece if gas would spill out all over my face. I know that in the manual it says to do it on a low tank but my car won't run long enough for the tank to get low! So in your experience did you lose alot of fuel or is it in a sectioned off portion of the tank?

        Tank Strainer collapsing? 140-160

After that experience, I made sure to regularly (~20K miles) change that little strainer, and especially after a trip or vacation where I had to buy fuel from unfamiliar sources.

It wasn't too hard -- I took a 1/2-inch drive ratchet extension, and ground down three sides slightly (i.e., the three sides without the little ball) to fit the piece's square drive hole, because the hole is slightly smaller than the drive's dimensions.

And I made sure it was when the tank was very low. Some gas came out (I never measured it), but my impression was that it was only a bit trapped in a baffled area of the tank surrounding the fuel pickup (and the strainer).

Just screw out the cap (be prepared for the fuel dripping), and the filter should drop out. Then take the new filter and insert it onto the pickup tube, and replace the cap.

Realize that this is all from memory -- but I think I'm "in the ballpark"!

Do you have any clue where I could obtain one of these strainers? I called my local dealership as well as a shop specializing in vintage volvos and I was told that they are no longer available.
Thanks for all of your help.

Did you give them the part no. that I gave you (p/n 688593)? It should still be valid, as of last year. That's when I gave that number to someone else I know and they got it from our local Volvo dealer's parts dept. Your dealer may not have it in stock, but they should be able to order it for you from the regional distribution center.

You should keep an eye on fuel pressure to find out for sure if it is or is not
a fuel pressure issue. Until you know that, all the electrical components in
the world probably will not help. But if it is always related to a fuel tank
level (NEVER does it on a full tank) there is plenty of room for suspicion
no matter what. It could even be something as simple as the vent in your
gas cap being plugged so you are pulling a vacuum in your gas tank.

I usually hook up a gauge to the cold start injector line.

I've been sorely tempted to hook up a fuel pressure gauge on my 145E
(the Yellow Peril) as a permanent installation. (It might read "Oil Pressure)
    on the face.)

That's a good point. I'm not so great with testing or diagnosing I'm only good and taking off and putting on. lol. Maybe I can get my dad to help me with the pressure guage. I had one in the old 240 that I had... actually... I still have the guage. I just wouldn't know how to run it to make it permanant. It would be a nice fixture to have seeing as I've had a few problems with the system. Thanks for your help.
