Anyway to bypass the fuel pump relay? 200 1986

I searched the archives, but didn't see anything that answered my question. I was able to bypass my OD relay, Now, is there any way to do the same with the fuel pump relay? I do seem do go through a couple especially when do long trips at high speeds. I keep a few spares. The plug blades on the relay are as follows:

85 87/2 86/1

30 86/2 87/1

One older post I read said jump 30 to 86, but didn't say which #86 to jump to.
I think I recall Lucid helping me out with my OD relay and that has been great with that puppy gone.

I hope someone can help.

One thing....all of these relays I've been going through have been from salvaged cars in the boneyard. Maybe I spring for a new one.........I'll let you all know what happens.

    Thanks everyone.

im with volvodad here, this is a dangerous place to try to save money or aggravation. also check and tighten the female connectors inside the fuel relays 6 pin plastic connector. good luck

Bypassing the relay should be a temporary, 'limp home' solution only. With the relay bypassed, there is no longer a safety shutoff of the fuel pumps in case of an accident that stops the engine but leaves the ignition on. Not hard to imagine a situation where this could yield a very nasty result.

I just replaced the relay in my son's car, but the original lasted 24 years and 300k miles. If your relay(s) are short-lived there's something wrong elsewhere...perhaps a pump that's drawing excessive current.

If the fuel pump relay fails, (and it's happened to my '80 244 and '84 245) Jump at the #5 fuse and #7 fuse location inside the car.

You should hear the pump humming. It was funny, My daughter had the '80 and It took a while to figure out the problem. About 6 months later, she switched to an '84 and her car wouldn't start when she was leaving my house. I just grabbed a small wire with alligator clips on both ends, and jumpted the fuse holders. Voila, it started right up.

I'm pretty sure the connection is hot even with the ignition turned off.. So be careful there..I remember pulling up to a restaurant with valet parking and told the guys I had to park the car. It was just too complicated to go through the jumper issue..

Best of luck. By the way.. the new relay solved my problem.. Good luck!

    Larry
