It's not an engineering failure, more like a maintenance issue. I've got a B28F with 220,000 miles on it and have had the cams/rockers/timing chains recently replaced. A good garage will be able to tell which rocker arms are bad and should replace just the bad rocker, not the cams just for the noise. Also, keep your valves in adjustment and change your oil every 3000 miles. Clean oil and reasonable expectations are the key for the PRV. It's not a red block but try to find an american v8 from the seventies that lasted over 150,000 miles. Enjoy your Volvo!

Well put, I have done this very same thing on 2 of my cars.

Okay,

I mean no disrespect... but of course not. It's a 26 year old engine that inherently wasn't that bad, it's just not up to scratch when compared to other Volvo engines.

Redblock 4's will easily hit 500,000 with regular maintenance. PRV's will generally go around 150,000 to 200,000 with regular maintenance. There are always high and low exceptions to everything.

Put it this way, a PRV will outlast anything comparable that the big 3 had to offer from the same era in a V6...
