AC compressor - can it be repaired? 200

hello,

the AC compressor on my 1990 240 is wonky...when turned on it runs fine but does not produce a high level of cool air conditioning...when turned off, the belt still turns when it should not.

is there a way to fix this without buying a new compressor?

if not, how much does a new/used one roughly cost?

thanks
mr. n.s.m.

If you are "not so mechanical" you shoud NOT change a AC compressor without feeding some magor free beer to "MR Mehcanical" Quick fix-- go to your neighborhood "autozone" or equivalant, inquire about a r-114 changeover kit, ask the ugliest guy behind the counter to check your system as to wheather it has been swithhed over yet. If it has not, have the unit switched over at your friendly volvo (import car) mechanic. AC systems can be expensive and also quite dangerous if mishandled. Good luck.

The belt (from the crank pulley to the A/C compressor pulley) should turn all the time when the engine is running. The clutch on the front of the compressor engages when you turn on the A/C and disengages when you turn it off. You may just need to recharge the system.
