engine temp? 700 1989

89 740 turbo, noticed lately that there is heat coming from the engine, but temperature never crosses 12:00 on the gauge. replaced water pump about 6 months ago when head warped; no loss of coolant now, hardly any (none? maybe?) oil consumption. recently had oil leak at valve cover, replaced; and it is still leaking a small amount (dime sized spot overnight), nothing too bad. fan clutch appears to do it's job, loudly at times, and the pusher fan comes on intermittently sitting at idle. yet i see heat waves at the edges of the hood sometimes. the heat is hot enough to need to peel the cap gasket when opening it and some of the clearcoat is coming off on the left side of the hood. could my temp gauge be lying to me? it is just measuring coolant temperature, right? is it possible the engine is retaining too much heat?

i'm clueless.

going to do some dye and try to find the source(s?) of the oil leak. any thoughts on the heat situation would be greatly appreciated.

jesse

Could be running lean or too little gas. If you know what to look for you can remove a couple of spark plugs and check. Most repair manuals like Haynes have pictures of spark plugs showing their appearance due to various engine running conditions. May be oxygen sensor problem.

How does the car run? Turbos produce a lot of heat. Do you notice this at all times or just when running it hard? How is the oil? Are you using synthetic? I have a turbo parts car that used to be my daily driver. I live in the desert. The gage will always stay in the middle, unless you loose a water pump or hose. I never noticed the heat causing any problems like you are describing. If the car has little power, I would suspect a clogged cat. How does the exhaust manifold look after driving? Is it red hot? Really need more info.

car lags a bit, notice it all the time. oil was changed 1000 ago, dino 10w30.
also in desert @ 5000 feet. manifold never glows, but after driving about 60 miles, i cooled down for a few and shut off and hear ping, ping, ping, ping which freaked me out. cat has never been changed, so far as i know. will go for a drive at lunch to check it out more closely.

      jesse.
