Don't be an idiot like me!!!! 200 1986

So I decided that the 25 amp blade fune in the engine compartment was getting way to gunked up for my liking. So, I pulled the fuse and wiped it off, but noticed that there was still a ton of grease / dirt in the fuse holder. I decided that a couple of shots of electronic cleaner would do the trick, so I went ahead and sprayed in on - WITHOUT DISCONNECTING THE BATTERY!! Within seconds, the drivers side on the engine compartment was in flames (the fumes from the cleaner ignited). Thankfully, I always carry a fire extinguisher in the truck, and I put the fire out (first time I have ever used it - it was actually kind of cool it a warped and twisted way...). Besides a slightly melted fuse holder, no harm done to the car (or me).

So just a reminder to everyone to disconnect the battery whenever using solvents of any type on the car. I learned my lesson!!!

Thanks for the warning, but 200 1986

You could write a book full of warnings and I would still find stupid ways to hurt myself. I cut a chunk out of my thumb last weekend while working on drip irrigation. (Don't ask).

Now that you went first... I was giving my 22 year old power drill a bit of service a couple of years back, and shot a liberal amount of electronic cleaner through the openings into the brushes/commutator to clean it up. Waited "for a while", and pulled the trigger. This is the closest I have ever come to recreating The Big Bang.

Anyway, I am happy to hear that everything went well with car and personell. An eye opener for us all.

    Regards,
    Erling.

Yeah, be careful. One of the self-service junkyards around here got lazy and left a battery in a 965 they had. The airbag was intact too. Oh how tempting that would have been to do something stupid.

Good thing you carry an extinguisher !!! A real eye opener, in more ways than one.

Stop by your favorite hardware/auto parts store and pick up a 25 AMP fuse protector/holder. For about two bucks, you can install this plastic/rubber fuse holder.....no more gungy 25 AMP fuse !!!

    Enjoy.
