Uh Oh...No Float 200

This weekend I was replacing the rubber hose to the in-tank fuel pump and I had a small problem. While I was putting the pump/sender assembly back in the tank I accidently (?) knocked the float loose from the holder and it fell into the gas tank. It landed outside the round baffle where the pump sits and floated away, out of sight in the tank. I couldn't see it, so I couldn't get it out. I needed the car today, so I put it back together and now I have no fuel gage. I can't decide whether to remove the tank and retrieve the float, or to just get another float and install it. I have a parts car (a wagon that's full of parts and junk) but I would have to remove the fuel sender to get the float. Which would be easier? Thanks for any response.

Thanks a lot for the offer. I picked one up yesterday from a friend who had a wreck that he was parting out.

Gee, I did that once. When I checked, the float ball was not available separately. I got it out by filling the tank until the level was above the well, adjusting the angle of the car to bring the float in view, then grabbing the little sucker with one of those push type three prong pick up tools.

Same thing happened to me! I just installed another one I found at the junk yard. While trying to retrieve; I never did find it,I found a fuel pump sock from a previous repair by the previous owner! Otherwise the extra float ball doesn't compromise driveability.

Uh Oh...No Float--- use a cork (champagne not wine) 200

As an aside. Before I finally got the the fuel pump tool from IPD to extract the float at the junk yard, I used a champagne cork! It worked fine but read about 1/8 of a tank too low which was fine by me, better to err on the low side! BTW a wine cork just didn't have enough buoancy as a champagne cork does.
