Technical Engine Question 700

All right, this last week I picked up a pristine example of a 1990 740 Turbo Wagen (745T)92,000 original miles. Not knowing much about Volvo (mostly a VW water cooled guy, early rabbits scirocco's and the such), I would like to know it the 230FT engine is an interference engine.

Also there is a coolant leak on the passenger side in the area of the oil filter, not always it comes and goes. After looking up under the car, my best geuss is it is coming from the tranfer pipe out of the back of the waterpump. I would assome the coolant is following the pipe to the lowest point and dripping there, because ther is no collant on the expansion plugs or the block. I if I am right it may possibly be the connection and seal at that pipe is faulty.

Thanks in advance for the help and advice.

Technical Engine Question 700

Nice car! I'd love to pick up a 745t or 945t with such low miles. To answer your questions:

1. The B230FT is not an interference engine so there's no reason to worry about bent valves etc. if the timing belt breaks.

2. Most likely it's the hoses and not the connections. On turbos there are two coolant hoses that lead to and from the oil cooler where the oil filter attaches. These two hoses get exposed to a lot of dripped oil especially during oil filter changes and are subject to deteriorating. I had mine leaking coolant around the hose clamps. If you don't know if it was done, I suggest replacing the two hoses and clamps. The procedure is described in the 700/900 faq.

Good luck,

Mike

Thanks for the quick reply.

That is re-assuring to know that the engine is non-interference. And I will put it on the lift (not really just a jack and stands) when I get home and check those hoses.
