Can LSD be removed without 'spreading' carrier opening? 200 1983

I'm scrapping an '83 turbo wagon, but would like to salvage the LSD unit from the 3.73 rear end.

Can it be done just by pulling the axles and bearing caps? Is the "rib spreader" required?
Or will the LSD come out without the ring gear?

And why is my Profile signature not showing? It "disappeared" yesterday, and I restored and resubmitted it -- but still no show.

Dave S. and my buddy Clay pulls them in the pick and pull yards with minimal tools, therefore, I conclude you do not need the spreader. He pulls only the core unit.

Thanks Bob,

I'm off to my P'nP in the driveway, complete with humid 90°.

Bruce,

You might be better off pulling the complete axle. The carrier has been setup for that axle housing and if the bearings are still good this would save a bit of time/money in setting up the carrier in a different housing.

I've pulled an LSD carrier out of an axle to rebuild and did it without a spreader. Your right about the axles and the bearing caps needing to come off. The way I did mine was the axle was out of the car and on jack stands with the opening facing upward. I then used 2 3' pry bars with curved ends place under the carrier with the bars resting on the sides of the pumpkin 90 degrees from the axle tubes. I then did a "push up" with a bar in each hand. Not really a push up but that's what it felt like. Carrier popped right out.
