m46 tranny problems 200 1976

My brother-in-law was moving up to portland in his 76 245 DL. The tranny started slipping in gear, not when starting out, but while in gear. Then is just quit on him.

When I picked it up last night I want to see what it would do. When I depress the clutch it is firm and when I put it gear, it feels good. But when I let out on the clutch nothing happens...and I mean nothing, I don't hear clutch spinning against flywheel, nothing.

Which makes me think it is more than clutch, or not clutch at all....any suggestions?

Peace,
Jonathan

Sounds to me like the friction liner on the clutch is gone. If it was slipping and then eventually quit pulling at all, it's definitely the clutch.

I have burned quite a few clutches in my life.

There was no smell associated...and typically i can here the clutch disk slipping on the flywheel and getting nowhere.

This car has no smell and I don't here the clutch disk trying to engage the flywheel?

Any thoughts?

It could have jerked the liner off of the clutch disc, or (not likely) the diaphragm could have broken in the pressure plate.
