Remove camshaft & distributor just to do a head gasket? Really? 200

Well I'm back from WWU and starting to work on my $200 '79 gt with a blown head gasket. I was reading the head removal instructions in the haynes manual and it all seemed pretty straitforward until the part where it said to remove the cam and distrubutor...I just can't think of why this would be necessary. I've looked it over a bunch, but I'm still way confounded about this. Here's some other questions...What else should I be doing while I'm in there, with the manifolds ripped off? I'm checking all fuel and vacuum lines, cleaning tb and intake, new intake and exhaust manifold gaskets, and resealing the fuel injectors. What am I forgeting? And is there a way to clean out those fuel injectors? This thing has 263,xxx miles on it, it had the head off and rebuilt ten years and 100,ooo miles ago, fyi. Thanks everyone!

No reason to remove either the cam or distributor. Sounds like you have everything else covered.

Sounds like Jake should trade that Haynes in on a Bentley manual too.

I checked, and Haynes* says the dist and camshaft have to come out, when pulling the head.

Yes, utter foolishness, the Haynes caused me more problems and raised eyebrows than any actual problems I encountered, as a novice backyard mechanic with my first car ten years ago. For some reason I figured a manual would be a good way to help avoid unnecessary complications. I particularly like their description of the cruise control computer as "...an aftermarket ECU." That had me scratching my head for a while... Most of my Haynes got used as masking paper for touch-up work on that car.

Believe it or not, I actually like the earlier Haynes 240 manual for 1974 thru 1990. That's all I had when I began with 240s in 1990. It also had their stupid section # references (as opposed to page #s), but it did have good K-ket info, the Left-Right balancing procedure for the CAM rack, and was generally a decent manual.
But IMO, the later (1976 thru 1993) Haynes is barely a cut above chilton. It may have good stuff too, but as long as there is the Bentley, who needs to struggle with the Haynes and its shortcomings?

Yeah, I have an even earlier Haynes (1975 to 1986) and I like it better than the Bentley for some things. It is an odd edition because the car they used for all of the main sections was a 75 with a B20 motor. It was really great when I had a 75 245. I still use it for my 89. The Bentley is by far the best for fuel injection.
