Hi all,
In my 1993 245 I really notice a loss of power when the a/c kicks on. I'm wondering if this is universal or if I should be taking a look at the compressor (or anything else) to see if it isn't trying to tell me something. I also notice additional noise when the system is on--hard to describe but kind of a "rough" sounding fluctuating noise: RRRRRRRrrrrrrrrRRRRRRRRRrrrrrrrr. The system is R134.

In my 1990 245 (R12) I don't notice the power loss or the additional noise.

Can anyone either put my mind at ease or light a fire under my butt to get it checked out?

    Unless the power loss you're experiencing is severe, I don't think you have much to worry about. In my `93 245, the power loss w/ac is fairly constant, but really noticable when climbing steep hills. The rough sound you're hearing could be the electric cooling fan kicking in & out.

    i dont know if it'll put you at east but i have exactly the same thing on my 91 245 2/235k & r-134. the noise you describe only happens when the compressor engages. it's louder outside the car than inside so i dont mind it. also the power does go down a bit at the same time but only noticeable when trying to overtake or heavy acceleration. at least it's cold.

      Mine does exactly the same thing although it doesn't put out cold air. When I turn on the a/c it puts a noticeable strain on the engine and when slowing down to take a turn or stop the engine will shut off. I was hoping to just charge the system or something but if it's doing this it seems like something more serious. I'd like to know how to remedy this as well.
