7mm or proprietary bolt for wiring harness? 900

Anyone know what size bolts hold on the wiring harness just above the starter motor on a 940 T?

A 6mm is too small but it seems an 8 mm won't go in. Is it 7mm? Or some proprietary size like the bolts that hold on the splash pan?

It's one of those impossible to get to bolts that you can only see from one tiny angle but when you reach in to put in the bolt you can't see it anymore. Got to tape the bolt to a screwdriver and do it all by feel.

Thanks for any knowledge.

    Bolt head size—or thread diameter?

Head is probably 7mm, as suggested by others.

There are no 7mm thread sizes on Volvos.

The bolts holding the intake manifold to the head are 7 mm! 900

When I replaced the head gasket on my car I asked the shop tat checked out my head to put a thread repair in one of the bolt holes that was slightly messed up. They reported they would have to special order them because they were 7 mm. When I checked myself, sure enough they were larger than 6 and smaller than 8! (They were able to clean up the threads so the repair wasn't required.)

I knew I'd put my foot in my mouth with such a positive statement. My Volvo experience stops with the 940. I guess you're referring to your 965.

I should have specified "B21/23/230", thinking primarily of engine threads. On those engines, the intake is held on with nuts, on M8x1.25 studs.

I can't tell you what size the bolt is, but keep in mind that there are different thread pitches in metric. just as we have fine thread and course thread in american bolts. I doubt if it is a 7mm. that is just too queer. I'd put my money on it being an 8 or 6mm

The Volvo hose clamps use 7mm hex heads. I believe the screws holding the ECC box together use 7mm heads as well. I wouldn't be surprised to see more 7mm stuff holding the car together.

They really don't monkey around with the sixes and eights on those cars. The tens and twelves will come in different pitches but you can rest assured that if it is a 6 then it is 1.0 and if it is an 8 then it is 1.25. I think I recall seeing some 7.0 stuff on some of there B27/28 stuff but good God that was a French motor and all bets are off when you start dealing with the frogs.
I am having problems imagining where this bolt is you are speaking of, is it for the wire harness clamp on the block under the IAC? Is so I'd have to say that it is an 8x1.25.
Oh and the splash pan on that car should be 6.0x1.0.

Yes, it's the harness clamp, just above the starter.

The substitute bolt from the hardware store is a non automotive 8mm bolt with a rounded head. The thing is that I'd already replaced that bolt with a similar hardware bolt... so I know they'll fit. Just didn't seem to want to go in yesterday.

Don't know about the threads, since I lost the original.

Anyhow, thanks for all the inputs. I'm sure I'll figure it out.
