It's amazing what some sellers either don't know or will do to sell a car. I've seen the "classic" term used on everything from an '82 242 to an '88DL but this time I can't decide if the seller is being vague by implying but not outright claiming it is one of the limited edition hoping someone will buy it, or he is just mis-using the classic term.
I played ebay cop and emailed him to ask about the missing dash piece and badge, didn't mention the lack of multi X wheels. Wouldn't mind seeing him get a flood of emails ;-)
Not a classic

The 200’s are a “classic” body style because of the similar body lines of the 100 series body style, witch is a “classic”. Hence “classic” I did not read any thing misleading in the word “classic”. The 200 series is a "classic" body style, is it not?.

I notice he didn't change the auction header! Typical used car dealer type...
I've seen 'em advertise 240's with Tilt Wheel, Alloy Wheels, Power Seats and even "ON STAR EQUIPPED"!!!!!
It costs a little extra to have SHMUCK put on a tombstone, but in some cases it is worth it!

Not that I'm sticking up for the Ebay guy, but it is a very clean 240 with fairly low miles. Front wheel drive??? They must have not looked under the car.
I think the "classic" term confusion is from NADA (National Auto Dealers Assoc). If the car is over a certian age, don't quote me on this, but I think over 15 years old is no longer listed in the used car book and the price quote in is the older car or "classic car" category. Just because it's old, doesn't make it a classic, unless it's really old, like over 40 years old.
The 240 will probably become a classic in our lifetime. I think it deserves a spot on the top 100 cars of the 20th Century. Motor Trend and Consumer Reports had rated it as the best used car buy for as long as I've been driving. I love mine. If they would have only made them from stainless steel, or at least rustproofed them better than a soup can I would be happy.

Yea, I just checked the ebay email address and he got back to me and said much the same thing, I feel kind of bad for bashing him. It seemed to be an honest mistake and unlike so many other ebay sellers he quickly added a correction to the auction. I hope he gets top dollar for it.

I wouldn't feel too bad. He changed the auction so that the "this is not a 240 Classic" was in small text at the very end. The auction still lists the car as a classic, still as a front wheel drive vehicle, and what the heck kind of exhaust system would be worth $800? Yesh.

It already had a bid when I first saw it and after the first bid ebay won't let you change any of the auction body or header. All you can do is add to it which he did fairly quickly. I don't feel too bad, but not everyone knows Volvos like we do and "classic" cars sell for more, even if they do look like bricks ;-)

It *is* a nice looking car, and depending on how it checked out, I wouldn't see $3-4,000 as an excessive price.
So, Dave, when are you going to bolt a turbo on to something? :-)

Well, the '88 is up for smog soon, it will be the last time in California. Depending on what the laws are in whatever county in Colorado (or wherever) we decide on I could be starting on it soon. I think statewide there is a requirement for an initial inspection and some counties have yearly (for <'82) and every 2 year for '83 and up smog tests. We've been flying up once a month to different areas to check it out. If a modified car won't pass the initial I'll have to wait, probably January of '07 at the latest.
I have all the gear, 90+ manifold, freshly rebuilt AW-71, all the wiring and computers, Mitsu' TD-04 turbo. All I'm lacking is time. I do miss the power of that '92 745Ti I had, but I don't miss the "quirks".
Cheers

That description box, just above the green animation, states that the drivetrain is "Front Wheel Drive"!
Now that's what I call customizing!

A 240DL Front Wheel drive would be a CLASSIC!!!
The other euphemism i see on eBay is 'RARE'!!!

Lotta sloppiness of terms, witness the "flathoods" of this board. By the way, yer killin' me with all those IPD bars out there. Still have yet to find a set. Everything but. Louvers, R-sport gauges 16" wheels, decor panels, R-sport wheels but no bars. Thanks for the reminder. Clays coming in here soon!

Good point Bob, but keep in mind "Flathood" was a slang term coined to denote the '83 Homologated cars, it is not an official Volvo term as far as I know. Terms like this grow and change as usage develops, witness the updates to Websters every year. That's why I like Flathood for the '83s and flathood to denote any 240 with a flat hood.
"Classic" is a specific term for a limited edition of 1600 cars. When's the last time you saw a "Flathood" badge on the back of a car?
BTW, you probably see Clay more than I do these days, since I moved out to East County ane he moved to Poway we're at opposte ends of the county :-( say hi for me.

There was an special edition in 1993 called the 240 Classic - as they'd held over production one more year (at least) than intended due to demand for the vehicle.

That's still a pretty damn good looking car.
I'll bet it sells for more then $4000.
At least, that's what it would sell for here in Portland.

The new 240 and 260 series vehicles had been developed with rigorous safety requirements that were to serve as the standard for the safety developments by the authorities in the USA. The Volvo Safety Concept Car (VSCC) was produced for the US Market. The 240 series Volvo became a classic during its own production lifetime of over 20 years. Minor modifications were undertaken in the 1981 and 1986 models and more than 2.8 million of the 240 and 260 series were produced.

I'm in favor of letting him 'off the hook' just a wee bit...it may be plain ignorance on his part, Dave.
Most 240's would qualify as 'classic' automibiles by most definitions. Still, as owner of '93 244 Classic #893/1600, I too find the term overused and am annoyed by it...I'll drop him a line too.
Thanks for the heads up.
