Help ID'ing K-jet Fuel Pump Relay 200 1981

Son's 81 came home behind a tow truck yesterday. From his description, it's a fuel problem (started missing, stumbled to a halt, no start).

I jumped the pumps at the fuse box - both run, tank draws 1.4A, main draws 5.5A, which sounds about right. Opened up the relay and there are obvious bad solder joints. My hamfisted attempt to resolder didn't result in a start. And there was no fuel pump 2-second-prime noise at 'key on'. (I think it's supposed to do this?)

Digging in my PnP treasure box I found a 6-pin relay with the same pin numbers as the relay in the car. But the one in the car is Red and has the Volvo logo and these numbers: 89 6369, and below that, 1 323 152. The hopeful replacement is Green, and has just this number: 89 81 60. Also: "Made in Hungary".

Looking at FCPGroton's web catalog, they state "Fuel Pump Relay GREEN in color 78-82 w/ K-jetronic...".

The car is a CA-spec B21F with the O2 sensor system and frequency valve, if that helps. Anyone know if this GREEN relay is a proper replacement?

Thanks, all.

IT RUNS!! (Thanks guys...) 200 1981

Installed the Green relay and still no start. Checked voltage on the relay coil feed from Fuse 13 - good. Checked the output Yellow/Red on Terminal 87 while cranking - nothing. Another bad relay? Nope - checked voltage on the Red (always hot) harness lead from Fuse 7, and it dropped to Zero at KP III, then recovered to only 6V with the key off. Wiggled Fuse 7 and got 12V. Pulled and replaced with a fresh 16A, and squeezed the terminals a little tighter.

Attempted a start and it fired immediately, and runs OK.

Looking closely at the old fuse, it has slight indication of overheating at one end of the Red plastic body...so a poor contact. I think the original relay was bad or at least on its way, but the moral of the story here is CHECK THE SIMPLE THINGS FIRST.

Thanks, everyone, for the great suggestions and info!

Thats great, but just for curiousity did the green relay work after you fixed the fuse issue. If it is good you might want to keep in the car as a spare.

Yes - the Green relay is in there now. I may try to find another as spare...the OE Red one looked very dodgy, at least one soldered mounting point for the frame of its internal solenoid switch was broken, allowing it to move around. Some of the high current joints looked crystallized. My solder attempts left some gobs here and there. But I guess I should test it before condemning it.

    Help ID'ing K-jet Fuel Pump Relay 200 1981

I don't think the color of the case matters. I have three fuel relays with the same pins (30,15,87b,31b,31,87) reading the numbers like you'd read a book. One relay is grey, one brown, one green. However, all have the same number on the blue plastic piece from which the pins emerge. In between the two rows of pins, all say 232 604. I believe all these relays are for our 81's.

As Mario says, there are a variety of K-jet relays over the years. I have seen the following (all with the same terminal numbers):

    1 235 337 aluminum case, Volvo logo, SK6465, W. Germany, dated 7.3.78 (assumed early K-jet/FI

1 235 337 black plastic . Never could x-reference, but have it marked as K-jet

    1 324 022 gray plastic, 898221, Germany, no date, superceded by 1 348 600 below

    1 323 152 red plastic, also superceded by 1 348 600 (per S.A.V.E. catalog)

1 348 600 green, later version of the gray 022

1 352 639 I don't have one, but my book says it supercedes the green 600

Besides the relay, check fuse 13 and its contacts (relay coil voltage). I've seen these fuse contacts cause just the symptoms you describe.

Also check the white/red wire connection at Coil #1 and relay terminal 31b (relay pick)

Some K-jet FI relays "buzz" the pumps at KP II, some don't. Art Benstein believes it varies by relay vintage -- but I had one that started doing it spontaneously after years of "no buzz".

    Hello,

When I put the part # 1 323 152 in the Volvo Parts Direct site it comes back as a Green relay made by Stribel (German). I know the replacement relay I put into my 82 K-jet was green and had a 30 amp rating as opposed to the 20 amp rating the red OEM relay had. If you want I can check the relay out in the AM and give you the answer.
