New fluid and a clutch adujstment makes all the difference... 200

Drained the worn fluid from the M46 today and adjusted the clutch. I went ahead and tried some Royal Purple Synchromax® synthetic fluid to replace the type F ATF I had in there, so we'll see how that works out. The old fluid had the burnt smell and was probably low.

On the test drive my previously hard to engage OD (espicially when warm) slips right into gear and shifts nice and smooth. Previously on the highway it would only engage cold, and only engage warm if I was on a downhill coasting.

I got similar results from Redline MTL. It's not the total cure but sure improved the symptoms. Maybe a fresh fill of ordinary ATF would have given good results too, but the synthetic definitely delivers.

The synthetic improves hot OD performance because its viscosity is more stable at high temperatures, so the fluid doesn't get past the leaking piston seals as badly. But after a highway run on a hot day, I'll wager that you'll still get some shuddering from the OD when you slow to about 45-50MPH...I do.
