help removing steering linkage 83 240

I am trying to remove the steering linkage to replace the sterring u-joints. I replace the rack, tie rod ends and balljoints and the car drove great for about 2 weeks and then the steering u-joints went.
Someone told me that in their shop they use an air hammer to force it down on the splines one way and then back the other way until it is off. I am having a really hard getting to mine at all as there is not much room to get at it.
Also those u-joints seem pretty pricey, would it be worth it to find a 240 with good ones and just pull the whole assembly? Will the whole 240 series be intechangable?

Remove the through bolts in the U-joint, take a self tapping screw and start it in the groove that the through bolts sqeeze together, let it soak with somekind of penetrant, take a long punch and drive it up the shaft and then pull it back off of that shaft once it is free of the rack. I have occassionally had ones that it was necessary to put a small slide hammer on to pull back down the shaft but I am in the business and it had to be done NOW, I have no doubt that if you let it set with some good penetrant like kroil or pb blaster it will probably slide right off in your hand, especially if you put the screws to it to spread it open a little bit. I imagine most, not all of the U-joints are interchangeable on the 240's and seeing as how I have had very very little call to replace them (I'm in So. Cal, home of killer weather) I would think that you could get by with a bone yard replacement. If by the "whole assembly" you mean the column complete I would have to say no. Replacing a column for a bad U-joint is overkill, but if you mean just the joint itself well then yes that is entirely acceptable.

Thank you very very much for your feedback. The self tapping screw is a great idea. I was trying to pry it open using a long pry bar and turning it in the groove but to no avail. I did soak it a few times with PB blaster first
I was thinking about pulling the middle linkage piece with both u-joints on either end and installing it like that...?

I see you are looking to pull the column piece with the U-joint couplers at either end then. I was thinking of just the lower one at the rack. If that is what you want to do then I would have to agree that your best course of action is just what you have in mind. Drive both of the couplers onto the center shaft and remove it as a unit.
