Still scratching my head on why '89 240 limps to life vs roarin to run 200 1989

Can't figure out why it is when I start the car it fires up like it's not got any energy. In other words..the other 240s sort of rev up and then back down...this one simply cranks and runs at very low idle.

I've tested the IAC valve using the diagnostic procedure described in Bentley and heard nice loud clicks as the valve cycled. Not a clue where to go from here.

My 90 is the same way. My best "GUESSES" are:

    1. I've never checked, but do 240's have a cold start valve like some other fuel injected cars do? Reason I mention this is that my car "roars" only when it is very cold outside (below maybe 15 or 20). As if the the cold start valve finally kicks in when very cold...

    2. Maybe your airbox thermostat is kaput? I'm not sure whether this applies, but I removed the preheat hose to the airbox in my car sometime ago and it seems to me that's when the car started behaving this way. Maybe I messed up the functioning of my airbox thermostat by doing this?

Thinking about this brings up a question. Are the IAC and the cold start valve two different names for the same thing? Any idea?? If so, maybe I should check my IAC too.

    G'luck!

I've never heard of a cold start valve. I'm gonna look into it. I'm just wondering what controls the starting idle speed. I've replaced my 561 ECU with a rebuilt one...but the car behaved the same with the old ECU. I was reading in the FAQs that poor idle could be fixed by cleaning throttle body.
But..I still need to learn more about how the idle is set on these cars.

There is a cold start valve on some older fuel injected VW's and a BMW that I once owned. If I remember correctly, it controls the idle when starting the car "cold". I believe this results in a higher idle when the car is cold. Kind of like a choke in a carburated car. During warm starts, the "cold start valve" does NOT activate.

BTW - my car idles fine when warm. So, I think the throttle body on my car might be fine. I'm not sure, but I think that a dirty throttle body will cause a bad idle all the time. In addition, it can cause sluggish performance.

I'm going to check out the 700/900 FAQ for more info. Let me know if you find out anything interesting....

          Update 200 1989

Read through the 700/900 FAQ today. It seems entirely posssible that my low idle when cold might be caused by a dirty TB or dirty idle air control valve. I suspect the IAC valve though as my problem only occurs when cold. Question - I don't own a Bentley, how did you test yours?

Based on my reading today, I think the IAC acts in a manner similar to the old cold start valve I mentioned in my earlier post. So I suspect they are one and the same.

In addition, the computer controls the IAC valve on LH 2.4 fuel injected cars such as ours. Apparently, the computer really sets the idle. However, I think that's a moot point if the IAC valve is already gunked-up.

One other possibility from the 700/900 FAQ is dirty or clogged fuel injectors.

My car needs a tune-up anyway, so I'm going to include a TB, IAC and flame trap cleaning. Hopefully that will cure my low idle. IMO - seems like a gunked-up IAC valve or throttle body are the most likely suspects....

Correction and more info.......... 200 1989

Some b230f's do use a cold start valve. Also called a cold start injector. Below is a post I found that might interest you...Read the response too.

I have the 951 ECU, so apparently the cold start valve isn't needed on my car even though I have one installed.
