Radiator Cycle 200

I am having trouble with a 1984 242 turbo. It is overheating and then I'm getting a nocking sound. I stopped and saw that teh top hose to the radiator was hard. Is this a thermostat problem or a radiator problem? Not sure which way the fluid moves and I couldn't find it in Bentley's.

If the top hose of the rad is hard, maybe your rad is plugged.

Fluid flows in the top hose, out the bottom.
You can remove the thermostat and see if that helps, but if the upper hose or radiator is hot, then it's open and not the problem.
If the car is OK at idle, but overheats at speed, then suspect the radiator.
If overheats at idle, then maybe the fan clutch.
All these could be OK, and it could be overheating from a compression leak into the water jacket (blown head gasket).
Knocking indicates high combustion temps.

I removed the thermostat and radiator. I cleaned the radiator and reinstalled it. I'm still getting the knocking after driving for about 5 min. Its not as pronounced as before but still there. Any thoughts?
