Installling a hitch. 200 1987

I want to install a trailer hitch on my 240, but I'm not exactly sure how to do it. From what I've read on some of the other posts it sounds like you need a hitch under and behind the bumper. I was wondering if you could just drill into the bumper under that plastic. Thanks for whatever help you can give me.

Zack

If you have a factory type hitch, it just bolts on. You may need to remove the plastic skirt under the bumper( or cut a notch in it ) make sure you have the long bolts that go down from inside the car.

      Installling a hitch. 200 1986

      Robert,

I just pulled a hitch from a '84 242T, and it uses three bolts on each arm of the hitch. My '86 245 doesn't have the other two holes that are smaller than the large one that goes all the way through. Is this safe? Can I make do without the other 2 smaller bolts per arm?

Just wondering and trying to be safe, needs to get me from New Orleans to Ft Lauderdale in a couple of weeks.

      Thanks and Cheers,
      Justin

If you have the long bolts and all the small ones that you have holes for, you should be fine.

NEVER, NEVER attach a hitch to your bumper! Go to ipdusa.com to check out the hitches on that site. They come with both written instructions, as well as telephone advise. As far as I can tell, these are decent aftermarket hitches.

If you find an OEM Volvo hitch at a junkyard, you are even better off, and you can always go to your local U-haul to have a hitch installed. The wiring for the trailer lights is fairly straightforward with the kits available from Autozone, Advance Auto, Pepboys, and even Wal-mart.

If you buy the proper hitch, you don't need to drill anything. The hitch bolts through threaded holes that are already in the frame, and uses longer bumper shock bolts with nuts.

If you attach a hitch to just the bumper, you'll rip the bumper off your 240.
