Tempermental radio. 200

When I bought the '89 240 last year I knew the OE radio did not work. Once in a while I'll turn it on, and although it appears to be on, nothing happens. So I'll just leave it. Then later it'll just come on! It might stay on for a bit and just go out again.
Does this sound like a simple ground problem?
How can I trouble shoot the tempermental radio?
Thanks.

I had a CR712 come to me like that. The on/off switch wasn't making strong contact. If memory serves me, I had to retension a spring in it. In the first picture, I believe the switch is the blue section in the multipurpose control.

Be aware that you have a separate amplifier which might be behind the glovebox, near the transmission tunnel in the passenger footwell, or behind the lower cubby in the dash depending on when in 89 your car was made. If you have the larger 5 1/4 front speakers it should be behind the lower dash cubby.

If you have the smaller front speakers try and see where the wiring goes from the radio - the glovebox is easy to remove - just undo the screws around the edge.

Then check wiring as already suggested.

Also check the aerial connexion and the earth to the bodywork - the mount sometimes gets damaged by impact.

Trace, clean, and retighten all external connectors--power or ground. While you're at it, how grungy are your fuse holders?
