Air mass meter @ coolent sensor

After going over the post below on Mass air meters, question arises. I've got 220k on the 97--960,with the original meter still going. The car starts fine, great for that matter. Car runs well getting around 24 on the highway now. It used to be higher on the gass mileage. Now the question, should I be looking for a new mam for my ride? Will it help performance and mileage?
On the coolent sensor question, over the weekend we were off on a fly fishing
trip,I got up both mornings to head to a store few miles down the road. Starting with a cold engine got to 60, and the car has gone to high gear ,or overdrive, temp gauge is still flat on cold when this happens. Does this indicate the temp sensor is bad?
Thanks for all replies

In terms of the mam yes you could buy a back up in case the origal goes out. You can disconnect the mam and the engine will run but poorly to get you home and when you need one asap it cost a lot more. In response to the coolant temp guage, check the wires going to the sending unit on the engine head under the intake manifold. 99% of the time the wires are decayed and need to be spliced.
