jack points for engine mount replacement 200

I am gonna try and replace my 86 244's shot engine mounts this weekend. I am not sure about the appropriate jacking point to support the engine while I do the replacement. I was thinking of getting a board to spread the force out and simply jacking under the oil pan. does anyone have an idea about the best way to do this job? Anyone actually done it before? Please advise.

I jacked mine one side at a time and placed a block of wood on a bottle jack. The jacking points were on the side of the pan where it bolts to the block. However, I believe the use of an beam across the fenders with a chain connected to the front lifting eye would be safer. WHATEVER YOU DO DON'T PLACE A JACKING BLOCK ON THE OIL DRAIN PLUG!!!!!!!! We had a whale of negative messages on this forum when a fellow did that and bent the drain plug area into a dimple.

Also be careful to keep your hands away from any pinch points where they could get caught if the engine support slips.

I recommed the one side at a time route, using a strong piece of wood and a floor jack. I did this job a few years back and this method worked well, trying to get both side at once didn't work for me.

I also found it was easier to unbolt the whole mount and bracket from the crossmember as one piece, instead of just taking the mount out by itself.

    Good luck,

I can't see from the pics exactly where the hook attaches to the engine. I am leary of lifting from the intake manifold, although we do it in hotrod v8's all the time , but these manifolds are not vertical and have much skimpier bolts. the diagram simply says "near thermostat" well those bolts look very thin...how much does this assembled engine wheigh? i have 2 jacks...a floor jack and a bottle jack....what if i use the floor jack under the crank pully and the bottle jack under the edge of the oil pan to prevent teater-totering and crushed fingers...doing one side at a time? also i discovered the shot mounts on saturday while changing the oil....on these engines how much oil can i expect to run out when i remove the filter without draining the pan (never tried that before)? I feel like the engine only needs to be lifted about 2 inches...am i correct in that guess? aka no need to remove the fan and shroud ?

      Try this photo 200

First, I can change the oil filter on mine without draining the pan and with barely any mess.

      Second, try this photo.

There should be a lift loop bolted on just above the distributor near the thermostat. If not on yours, hopefully you've at least got a point of reference now. Or,... jack it under the crank pulley and stabilize it with a jack under the oil pan. I don't see anything wrong with that.

      Good luck.

Put the front end on jack stands and use a jack and a short piece of 2x4 to lift one side of the oil pan where it bolts to the engine block. Do one side at a time not too hard but can be dirty. It is easier to remove the oil filter so it might be a good time for an oil change. Dan

I have a picture of an engine lift fabricated with angle iron, some 2x4s, and a clothesline hook. I can get that to you later this evening. If someone else here knows what I'm talking about, by all means beat me to it and post the pics.

When I did this job I used a piece of lumber under the crank pulley to jack up the engine, but was a little leery of it rocking back and forth.

Also, for underneath, if you don't have one, get a Gear Wrench for working the motor mount nuts, you'll be glad you did.

May your weather be fine this weekend.

In the FAQ's, there are mechanical tips and ideas, one of which shows the arrangement you've described.
