Hello,

Anyone had problems with this? If so,what are the symptoms?

Thanks,
Brian

Did you check the valve using the self-diagnostic feature? If it cycles during the test it should be alright.

I just checked the valve during the self diagnostic test and it didn't cycle. The valve was removed and cleaned so as to rotate freely and when 12 volts was applied the valve went to the full open position immediately. Hooked it back up to the car and tried the test again , no joy.

        Did the injectors cycle?
Also, did you run the mode 1 check? There are a couple of codes that indicate trouble with the valve. And they do not trigger the 'check engine' light. Bentley sez if you see code 2-2-3 there is a, "Fault in signal to/from air control valve." If you see code 2-3-3 the condition is, "Air control valve closed, possible air leak." If either is the case Bentley sez to check terminals 9 and 33 at the ECU wiring harness connector. Use the ohmmeter with one probe at 9 and the other at 33. R should be 8 ohms. My hokey little volt/ohm meter only reports R x 1K so 8 ohms is unnoticable.
As far as testing the valve, you've done part of what Bentley sez by applying 12V and it sounds like it's working. Prior to doing that Bentley suggests that you feel and listen to the valve while the engine is idling. You should be able to feel it vibrating and hear it humming. Then they also say to check resistance at the terminals on the valve. With the ignition off remove the connector at the valve. Put one probe to one terminal and the other probe to the other terminal. According to the book you should see about 8 ohms resistance.
Please note that that I'm not an expert on LH injection and I'm just parroting what's in the book.

Got a copy of the Bentley manual? Follow the directions for mode 3 diagnostics on 241-8. In fact, do all the tests for mode 1, 2 and 3. Do the Ignition tests too. You might have one or more stored trouble codes that could put you on to the problem.
Or see the General Notes on On-Board Diagnostics in Volvo RWD Cars on the 700/900 FAQ and then do the tests as described a little further down the page.
For mode 3 FI tests the FAQ lists several tests that aren't performed on the 240's. On my car it tested only the injectors and the air control valve.
I think the instructions in Bentley are a little clearer than the FAQ.
Bear in mind when you are doing mode 1 checks, with the exception of 1-1-1 (no fault codes stored), if a code is returned it indicates a problem. In mode 2 and 3 when the code is returned it means the component being checked is okay.

I suspect that I may have a problem w/ my '89 240 IAC....the symptom that I have is when you start the car, it doesn't seem to rev high enough. It's like ..when I crank the car, it seems to jump to life quickly....but it idles very low...that is anemic. Both the other 240s I've owned have sort of "revved" up and then settled back down. So I'm thinkin that I may have an IAC problem.

My sister's '92 240 had the exact same problem, and this is what my mechanic and I did: I pulled the IAC out, cleaned it with brake cleaner(meaning the inside of the IAC), had my mechanic use pressurized air to dry it out, and then reinstalled it. Before we did that, the car(when starting) was reving like a Honda(i.e. very low), and for the first two to three seconds after starting the car the "check engine" light would be on. After this minor repair work, the check engine light hasn't come back on, and the automobile is reving properly(on start-up). I hope this helps...Have a splendid weekend! :)
