Hello. I rebuilt my tranny last year. the car still isn't driveable. The tranny locks up in drive, slips in low, and works in reverse. I have rebuilt the valve body and had it inspected so I know it isn't the valve body. I am wondering if it is the sprag?? Some one also tried to tell me I need to align the gears?? I am dropping the tran again here soon. I need some help please guys! Is there any way to tell if the gears are binding with the tranny outside of the car? Does any one have any information on how to install the sprag that way I can tell if it is in backwards. THANKS!!!

The governor on the output can be easily installed backwards. The symptoms of that are similar to what you describe. Just remove the tailshaft housing and pull it off to confirm the oil passageways line up.

Look around for a green Volvo service manual. Mine is for 72 164, but has lots of pages on the BW35, with copious pictures and diagrams, and trouble shooting tips. The manual is worth it's weight in gold. The appear on Ebay once in a while.

well I have a tranny manual photocopy from a tran shop in my area. It was from a rather large book with tons of other tranny's in it. It is what I used to rebuild it, however it isn't as discriptive as I would like. Does your manual cover the same bw 35 that is in my car? If so is there any way you can send me some scans of the sprag removal/install/inspection, and the governor removal/inspection/installation. As far as the govoner goes, the oil ventures what would they look for. from what I remember it has a bold ontop that houses a spring and check ball. I can't remember any more about it. Could you please give me a little more discription about the govenor. Please treat me as a noobie. LOL I have no experence with auto box's this was my first. However I have rebuilt several manuals. Thanks for the input guys!!
