I bonsai 'd the Volvo.....cowl vent solution using bonsai tools 200 1989

I do bonsai.

When I had to figure out how to keep the leaves and other debris from getting into the cowl vent on the 240, I used the tools that I use on my bonsai trees to fashion and attach a screen under each of the cowl vents. cool, huh?

When potting small bonsai trees, you have to install a screen on the bottom of the shallow pot to keep the dirt and gravel from washing out of the drain holes everytime you water the trees (which is often). I used some of the stash of bonsai screen that I had to fish into the cowl vents with wire that I normally use to keep the bonsai tree branches growing like I want them to. It is rather maleable wire and it was perfect to hold the screen mesh up against the cowl vent while I used small tie wraps to permanently attached the screen. The screen is made out of tough nylon so it won't corrode.

Surprisingly enough..the tie wraps can't be seen that much against the dark blue paint. It really doesn't look that bad attall. Now we can park the darn thing under the pin oak tree and not have all the leaves getting into the body.

Never thought I'd bonsai a Volvo!

I did something similar to my 2 240s. I picked up some plastic wire mesh, black. Cut it to the right size and used 2 zip ties to hold it in place. The did flap around ever so slightly,so now the edges are held down with black electrical tape. Not too noticeable on my black car.The other car is silver so I used silver tape.I am trying to construct a better cowl vent screen like on the p1800s or the 122s.Once I have this figured out the I will use them in conjuction with the cowl vent COVER that IPD sells.I think the cover without the screen is a waste. You will still get leaves and debris in there.Necessity and ingenuity, great combination.Great idea!

Hear what your saying about IPD cowl vent covers.......leaves get stuffed into the vents. I used a small piece of plastic raingutter cover (to keep leaves out of the rain gutter) to cover the front opening. Cutting the raingutter cover so it would have tabs at the top to fit into the cowl cover, and just let the bottom sit on the body. Problem with winter cold and plastic becoming brittle. So, next step is a wire mesh (I'll paint it black) and cut tabs for top and bottom (to fit into original vent slits). No more leaf stuffings !!!

      Enjoy.

I've used an expanded aluminum gutter guard metal to keep leaves out of the air intake. I like your idea of sealing the front of the IPD covers. My daughter's 240.
