more engine leaks! 140-160 1968

After fixing the oil leak from my front crankcase seal, I have noticed a major leak coming off the bellhousing junction. I am pretty sure it is the rear crank seal. My question is, what is the best way to replace this seal and the oil pan gasket at the same time? Do I need to pull the engine? Are there any other items that I should replace at the same time? I would like to do this job without spending much money.

Thanks again,

Chris w.1968 142S

If you don't HAVE to change the oilpan gasket it is fairly easy once you
get the tranny dropped. If your motor mounts are good the crossmember will
fairly well hold the engine up (although I would put a jack and a board
under the pan). You'll need a pilot shaft to get the clutch plate installed
centered. Also a torque wrench for your flywheel bolts.

I understand it is possible to do this by dropping the tranny and jacking up the engine, blocking it and lowering the jack away... But I do these sort of jobs by removing the whole shebang (I'm a nut;).

The tranny will have to come off no matter what to get the holder off, seal replaced and holder back on.

While you are in there check the tranny input shaft cover for a leak there too.

Is your PCV system functional? If not, fixing that may solve your leak troubles without the hassle.

Before you start please take a look at other sorce of leaks like a valve cover gasket. Oil will move down and back as it get to the ground. Or could be a oil pressure sending unit gone bad. So look around before pulling things apart. wash every thing off then track the sorce.
