Roof rack solutions for wagon 200

When I needed to replace some metal parts of the roof rack on my 1988 245 wagon, I was dismayed to discover that I could not screw the supports back into the rubber fittings that hold the rack into the roof.
The rubber had deteriorated to the point where the rack was unsafe at any speed - there was nothing holding it down!
The parts dept at my favorite Volvo dealer insisted that the rubber mounts were no longer available for the 245. I knew better. To order them you need the name and the part number. The part name is well-nut. The part number is 75211-3 . You need 12 to replace all the mountings. GM has a similar part with a different number, 528846. Google also liosts them under well nuts with several sources. Be sure to specify the well nuts for roof racks; others are used to mount cowls, etc.
If you must improvise, you can buy something similar in a hardware store, but they don't work as well as the o.e.m. part. To use the generic substitute, push out the threaded nut at the bottom of the wellnut and in its place insert a jacknut, The jacknut will expand and tighten the well nut agaist the inside of the roof as you tighten the screrws from above. Well nuts and jacknuts of various types and sizes are available on the Internet from American Trim & Upholstery - atrim.com. They have a wealth of other products for car restoration and repair.
With new well nuts all around my roof rack is snug and weather-tight again- good for another 17 years.

I've got a Thule Rack on my wagon. I have the fairing so mileage isn't effected too bad. I can throw my mt. bikes on top, ladders, skis, etc. When we travel as a family, I throw my Thule cargo box on top and can carry golf clubs or luggage in the carrier in addition to two mt. bikes.

I would never get rid of my Thule system. Yakima is a good system too, but I figured my Swedish brick needed a Swedish rack system.

See pic in my profile. I have since added the fairing and have other attachments.

You might also consider a real roof rack that actually functions.

Good Luck,
Chris

I have a Thule rack with bike nounts and a fairing, bujt frankly it is too difficult to hoist the bikes up and down, and takes too long to remove the bike carriers. Also, the Thule makes wind noise and thee fairing cuts down on gas mileage. The dealer installed rack m ay be a piece of junk, but it works an d suits my needs.
I have tried it both ways. In any event, the Thule needs to be mounted to an existing rack.

I also was disappointed at the poor service from dealers on the well nuts.
I bought one or two from a Volvo dealer and then searched to match it, and was successful at about 1/2 the price.

I found the size stamped on the OEM part, it was either 1/4-S or S-1/4.
(I think it was 1/4-S)
The 1/4 refers to that it's a 1/4-20 screw, American size.
I believe the racks were put on in the US after import.

There are other types of 1/4-20 screws that don't work, as indicated by ARTHURR.

The exact well nut was available in some hardware stores and not in others.
True Value had it, Home Depot did not.
Don't know about Lowe's.

I found 'em, so I think you can too.

Correct. They are dealer installed items.
