new speakers 200 1992

dear, nice volvo people....
i am new to this site, but anyhow i just bought a '92 240,
and would like to upgrade the speakers with another 4"
pair. i really care about them sounding as good as possible,
but i don't want to cut any holes other than what's there.
any suggestions? (i'm replacing the receiver, too)
sincerely, greygrl

Someone posted elsewhere that Volvo riveted their speakers into the doors.
Do a search here on "stereo" for a post about 5 (?) days ago. Good tips there.

From all that's been written here, you definitely should pop some covers off and have a look at what's in your own doors. Yours could be original or could be a replacement by now. Don't go by what's on the grill - your grill doesn't necessarily have to be the one that came with the speaker.

I'm pretty sure that for speakers, the "size" is the diameter across the outer frame. For square or rectangular speakers like Volvo likes to use, I THINK it would be the dimension across the shortest part of the frame.

In either case, be sure to also measure the distance between diagonally opposite attachment screws. You want a speaker that will go onto those holes if at all possible. Don't lose the metal clips that likely are there.

I put a pair of Bosch 4" in my '84 a couple of years back that popped right in with no fuss, sounded great .

I have a '79 245 wagon and I also wanted to put a nice deck and some speakers. I got an Alpine deck that I couldn't have been happier with. Since mine had 4" speakers in the front I could take all the bass out of the music to make them crystal clear, and run 2 separate amps, one for a subwoofer, and another for some nice separates or 6 x 9s that I could build boxes for. Thats the best way in my opinion to make the sound full and even at all volumes since differant sized speakers make more or less noise at differant amounts of power. My biggest tip is check the depth speakers can be mounted. I bought some awsome Diamond M3 4" speakers for my doors on closeout for $75. They are the clearest and loudest speakers I have owned. The only thing is that the magnets are too big for the doors. I had to fabricate some mounts so that they would fit. Even then the magnets would drag on my windows if you rolled them down about 3", and for that reason I had to pull them out.

Greygrl:

Have you actually measured the openings in the door panels? From the other posts, it sounds as though there may have been some '92 240s with 5-1/4" openings. I just measured a set of front door panels I pulled from my '92 245 parts car, and the openings are indeed 4" in diameter which definitely limits your choices. I have some Polk Audio 4" speakers in another 240 which sound very nice to me, but I don't believe Polk is making 4" speakers anymore! Crutchfield is listing only three 4" speaker choices that supposedly fit a 240, Kenwood, Sony and Pioneer. All major brand names, all the same price; $49 a pair.

Hello:

If it's a '92, then they are probably 5 1/4". Depth is the big issue-- others will advise about brands-- mine has the ones in it that it came with when I bought it, so I have no firsthand experience...

Crutchfields is generally a good place to start looking.

Good luck!

I agree, Crutchfield has a cool feature that will tell you the exact size speakers the car has stock and what fits depth wise, etc.

Not this time.

Crutchfield is way wrong on the late 240.

Ditto ... I sell lots of speakers and cannot find a direct replacement. Hole spacing for screwss is unique also on these 5.25". I think I will add a small amp and a woofer off the line out on my new head unit. Maybe mount woofer in the cargo storage floor of my 245.
