I have Erma (the name of my car) inspected and am legal on the roads now.

I bought a secondhand washer reservoir and washer motor. I cleaned them up and they look pretty. Now I need to know where to place the bracket and where to run the tube and wire through the firewall.

Patrick sent a page from his Volvo instruction book that places the reservoir right by the battery. I think I've seen them placed by the Flasher unit on the other side of the engine bay as well. Do you have photos of your engine bay and where you placed the unit and ran your tubing?

By the way, I am a novice mechanic but I cleaned out the heater intake and lubed all the controls. Unfortunately the air control mechanism broke (the little arm) that closes the baffle to restrict airflow coming out the back of the unit against the firewall. the little arm rusted in half right as it enters the heater box. What is best -- to just fix the air flow strictly open or closed for now?

You wouldn't have believed the amount of dirt and pine needles I got out of the area underneath the aluminum cowl grating. I also removed a lot of stuff right above the heating element.

Hi,
I think the best thing to do is find the original black, washer pump wire, then determine which bracket goes on which side of the engine bay (there were three as far as I know):
The "cage" bracket (wraps around a very hard-to-find square bottle) was usually fitted to the right side of the bay in front of the carbs on the early cars (thru '66), you'll probably find the black wire tucked back into the harness with the THICK black generator wire and the red amp-light wire. If these are the only two wires on that side, that far forward, it was probably snipped at some time.
The were two flat brackets for '67-on: one (very flat) bracket that nestled the botle between the remote brake booster and the master cylinder, and one (with a ridge on the lower edge) that located the bottle forward of the brake booster. The one with the ridge sits -kind of- on top of the ridge on the foward portion of the inner fender (hard to explain). You should be able to find an un-used black wire somewhere in that area. To test the "found" original black wire, hook a test light to it and pull the wiper switch out to the third position.

Beatiful engine bay man. If you can, try a K&N air filter on place of the original one, a bit more power are extracted from the engine that way.

This photo of my enginebay was taken a couple of years ago; since then I fitted twin SU carbs instead of the single Stromberg and switched the A-camshaft for a '70s injection type (D). I still have to fit the 1.3.4.2. exhaust manifolt and alloy intake. Trust me, it's a bit faster allready! hehe!

The GPL conversion by the way is perfect, never had any (serious) trouble at all and I used this on a daily basis, 20.000km a year!

This is the engine bay from the 1967 owners manual:


(The sqare bottle is in front the brake master cylinder)

On older models (195x-1963) the round bottle was near to the battery and the pump was near and outside it.

Mine is nominally a "67" but has "68" attributes such as later rear end, steering column, F/R brake split, moved washer bottle, etc...

That is a Volvo typical configuration on that era. My car (one of the last 4 door 1 carb 121 units) is labeled as a 1966 but its batch was made from August 66 to March 67. Some minor parts fits the 1967 configuration. Btw: the engine on the 1968 owners manual:

Where you put the arm is up to you but more air is better in my experience. You can always control the temp with the other control.

My water bottle was on a bracket (missing bottle, sigh) by the radiator on the left side (driver's here).

Haven't investigated the plumbing, yet.
