I know this has been diagnosed very thoroughly before, but I am puzzled that the fuel gauge only acts up, swinging from full to empty, on a full tank of gas.
Once I use about 1/2 gallon, it goes away and resumes normal service.
Some sort of airlock in the system perhaps?

You didn't fill the tank while the engine was running did you, noticed that this will screw the fuel gauge on mine up for sometime when ever this is done. It eventually straightened itself out.
