Failed Odometer 120-130

I've got two clusters and neither have a working odometer. Any thoughts of the cost/feasibility of repairing these. or maybe an upgrade to something that can count higher than 99,999?

My amazon got to 350,00 before the odometer quit and the previous owner belived it went to around 500,000 before I bought it. It's be nice to prove my milage to random people on the street :)

Have you taken it apart to see what is the matter with it? Maybe it has
a broken gear like the later models (73+) get. If so the same gear guy who
advertises on this site can probably help you.

you mean odometergears.com? I'll have to take it apart to figure out which gear size I need. $25.00 for a gear seems a little steep to me, however.

It is but it is the only game in town and if it solves the problem, consider
the value of your time messing with it......

Took the spare a part 120-130

Well, I disassembled the spare cluster this morning and found all the gears to be intact. The worm gear from the speedometer turned, the odometer gears turned and the mileage went up and reset on the trip. so... I'm not sure what was/is wrong, but my bench test suggests that the spare is fine.

Btw. It's summer and my time is cheap :)

I went through the same exercise, including fixing the little ratchet pal on one of the number wheels. Bench tested it, and it worked fine; installed it, and it wouldn't work. Took it out again, bench-tested it again; and again, it worked. Re-installed it: same story again, wouldnt work. Pulled the cable, cable looked fine. Replaced the whole unit with one from a later model and, of course, had to get another cable because the connector wouldn't fit. All is well now, but I'm still at a loss as to why the first one behaved the way it did. I sincerely wish you more success with the repair job than I had.

I have found that if the tang on the cable extends too far into the unit it can cause it to jam and fail or just not work right. I cannot recall if there was a washer in there from the factory?

Actually, there is something like a small washer crimped into the end of the cable sheath on both ends to limit cable movement.

Failed Odometer 120-130

2 or 3 years ago, wanted to get my VDO speedo overhauled/ calibrated and was quoted around $125 at an instrument repair shop in Southern California. If you go that route, make sure the company has experience working on those older VDO units.

A shop recently charged me $90 simply to paint the faceplate textured gray, and managed to destroy the thing in the process. "Repairs" supposedly under warranty, time will tell what happens. Luckily, I had a spare which I painted/ overhauled myself. Kinda fun actually, but a lot of little parts to deal with.

Failed Odometer - get a GPS 120-130

I second Damian. Ask for, get and follow-up on past customers experience. If they are unwilling then talk about or have a couple of past customers call you, move on. I pulled out the cluster twice to get the odo-meter side of the cluster fixed at LA/Orange county reputable speedo shops. Ends up the first one was not reputable and did a poor job plus I had to get the BBS (Better Business Bureau) involved to get my item back. Seems as though he wasn't paying his lease and he got locked out. That fix lasted about 2 years and then the same gear 'broke' again. The next time i took it to a higher end shop and this time I got 4 years out of it before it broke again. That was 15 years ago. Now the milage seems to stay the same and I really don't care. Just drive the darn thing.

If I really want to know what a typical month of driving will do then I throw in a gps and track the miles. Of course this is also a good time to see what the mpg is too.

been officially around once but stuck at a low number for 15 years!

Failed Odometer - get a GPS 120-130

My Duett has shown 15000 miles for the last 33 years that ive owned it. Have always been curious about the gas mileage since the car has such a small gas tank...only 7 gallons. But I havent run out yet. Its just a pain filling up every 100 miles or so.

I don't have any immediate plans to get the odometer fixed although I took apart a spare to see what was what. Possibly could just be hardened grease in there.
