just bought a 242GT some questions also conversion to a B230FT?????? 200 1980

Fellow Bricksters,

I have recently ended my search in finding a 242GT. Purchased for $1000.00 (AUD) with 380,000 kilometres on the clock (i am from australia). Car is as to be expected for the price with a change over to the B23E by one of the previous owners, however the previous owner really hammered this motor daily and it shows at times. Some rust especially around the bottom of the front windscreen of both sides. Should not cost me too much to get fixed however. Following are the mechanical issues I need to look at.
-engine mounts needs to be replaced
-gear stick bushes fairly poor/however very drivable as is.
-gearbox will need to be looked at. As it will not engage into overdrive and it is not a relay problem, could be poor/old fluid and may need to be drained, very unsure with this issue as when you downshift at times it will not engage just rev. I can get a replacment gearbox for $600 so no drama's there as a worse case scenario.
-The steering column has come loose as you can move it up or down a little. My very trusted volvo mechanic said it was a common issue with bricks this age and has shown where to spot weld the column back.
-Finally the tie rods bushes on both sides will need to be replaced.

Therefore this brings me to my final question. This car is strictly being treated as a project/third car for the family. So whilst i am tinkering around with the before mentioned issues I am contemplating sticking in a B230FT. Has anyone had experince with putting the turbo charged motor in a 242GT before??? Is it possible or am I wasting my time??? Any help greatly appreciated.

You can also just bolt up the bottom end from a b23 to your head. Really wakes them up and you still have normally asperated reliability.

Go to the above site, as this subject was just discussed there. It is under the "performance and suspension" forum. As I recall the only issues are
(1) wiring harness, (2) distributor placement and (3) ECU needed from turbo car.

From the notes on the post, it can be done without too much difficulty...
